Assignment for Extensive Reading

Anecdote

Jimmy and new House’s

Jimmy lived in the country, and he loved playing in a very shallow river near his house; but then his father got a job in a big city, and he moved there with his family.

Their new house had a garden, but the garden was very small. Jimmy wasn’t very happy.

“is there a river near here ?” he asked his mother on the first morning.

His mother answered, “No, there isn’t, but there’s a beautiful park near here, Jimmy, and there’s a pool in it. We’ll go there this afternoon.” Then Jimmy was happy.

After lunch, Jimmy and his mother went to the park. Jimmy wanted to walk near the pool, but there was a sign in front of it. His mother read it to him: “WARNING: This pool is dangerous. 367 people have fallen into it.” Jimmy looked into the pool carefully. Then he said, “I can’t see them”.

Analysis of Text

1. Abstract (Jimmy lived in the country, and he loved playing in a very shallow river near his house).

4. Incident (Jimmy wasn’t very happy after him knew new house have garden very small).

Global Warming

Global warming is a complex phenomenon, and its full-scale impacts are hard to predict far in advance. But each year people learn more about what causes global warming.

People argue that vehicles and industries pollution make global warming happen. We know that emission gas of industries and vehicles cause increasing of carbon dioxide and air vapor in atmosphere which makes world temperature hotter, called greenhouse effect.

Illegal logging is one of causes global warming. For example, in our country, Indonesia, illegal logging is most popular activity. Many people, government or commoners like do it. Ironic, they know, if they cut trees more and more, temperature of world will increase. Consequently, Earth to be hotter. But no one care with this problem.

Using electricity much more, cause temperature of earth warm up. In common, people produce energy with fossil power that makes carbon dioxide in atmosphere increase.

So, I think that people must be more care about this phenomenon. Some activity can us do to reduce effect of global warming. How to decrease such as :Modernize power plants and generate electricity from nonpolluting sources, cut our electricity use through energy efficiency,using car that run cleaner and burn less gas.

Anecdote

The Princess and the Pea

There once was a prince who wanted to marry a princess, but it had to be real princess. So he went all over the world looking for a real princess. Everywhere he met young ladies told him they were real princess, but could never be completely sure that this was true. There was always something about them that did not seem quite right. And so, after a long time, the prince went back home to his parents and was very sad.

One evening there was a terrible storm. It rained heavily and there was thunder and lightning in the sky above the royal castle. Then there was a knock at the castle gate. The old king went out to see who it could be.

A princess was standing outside the gate. The rain ran down over her hair and clothes and into her shoes. She told the king that she was a real princess, and he asked her to come inside.

“Well, said the old queen. We’ll soon find out if that is true. She went into the guest bedroom and took the mattress and blanket of the bed. Then she put a little green pea on the bed. She put twenty mattress on top of the pea, and then twenty mattresses on top of the pea, and then twenty blankets on top of the mattress. This was where the princess going to spend the night.

The next morning the queen asked the princess how she had slept.

“Oh, it was terrible” answered the princess. I didn’t close my eyes all night. I don’t know what was in my bed, but I lay on something hard, and now I am black and blue all over. It was quite a terrible night.

Now, the king , the queen and the prince could be sure that this was a real princess she had felt the little pea trough twenty mattresses and twenty blankets. Only a real princess will be able to do that.

So the prince married the princess and the pea was put in a museum for everyone to see, unless someone has taken it, it’s still there today.

Hortatory Text

Corruption

Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money and corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States. It’s just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims Jakarta as the most corrupt place in Indonesia.

The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs who want to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe the officials.

Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing the corruptors is still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generations from getting a bad mentality caused by corruption.

Analysis

1. Thesis:

- Do you know what the meaning of corruption is ?

- What is the relation between money and corruption ?

2. Arguments:

- Corruption is common everywhere in the world.

- I think the measure taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing the corruptors is still not far enough.
